On August 7, UNIST held the 6th National UNIST Big Data Analysis Competition, inviting university students nationwide who are interested in Big Data. Organized by the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Management, the primary purpose of this competition was to introduce the importance of the analysis of data and offers an opportunity of indirect experience of data analyzing. This year, a total of 52 students from 33 universities across the globe partook to learn how to analyze the big data then, apply it to the challenges, and they develop the skill to solve the problem. Beginning with the first competition in 2012, every year students across the country take part in the competition. This year’s event was different from the previous competitions in that it used the Big Data, which was developed in-house at the Port Management Information System (Port-MIS) in Ulsan. The event constituted special lectures on big data analysis, a short introduction on the competition-topic, team project presentations, awards ceremonies, as well as the completon ceremony. The competition proceeds in the following manner. Each team, consisting of 4 undergraduates from different majors and schools, selects one theme, analyze the data, then presents their completed projects. This year’s grand prizes have been awarded to Group 3, including DaeKi Park from Chonnam National University and YunSeok Lee from the University of Michigan.
