  A real-time forest monitoring and alert application, designed by a team of UNIST students has been selected as the Grand Prize winner of the 1st annual “Big Ideas” competition, conducted by the Forestry Promotion Institute (KOFPI). This is a national Big Data analytics competition, conducted by the Forestry Promotion Institute (KOFPI). The primary purpose of this event is to develop innovative solutions to transportation problems, social protection, and environmental issues through data innovation. On July 20, the following three graduate students in the Business Analytic MBA program, WooJin Jang, SangWon Chung, and SeungJoon Lee were selected to receive the Grand Prize at the competition for coming up with an idea to develop a monitoring system that provides real-time information on forests. The team took official data from Korea Forest Service and the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs, and then provided detailed data analysis on forest recreational areas, campsites, as well as national cycle network through out the nation. According to the team, “Based on the results of the data analysis, we are able to provide the best locations for recreation sites, shops, and other amenities.” They continue by saying, “This will attract more visitors to the forest farms, thereby making significant contributions to the nation’s economy.” “With this discovery, tourists can have easy access to local amenities and nearby tourist attractions,” says WooJin Jang.
