  The 4th UNIST Big Data Analysis Competition was held from August 20-21, 2015, targeting national undergraduate students. Around 200 undergraduate students from 52 different colleges applied and 32 students were selected and achieved the opportunities to participate in the competition. This competition consisted of multiple programs including Process Mining, Analysis Tool Education, Team Projects and so on. Students took a special lecture of Process Mining which is about extracting useful information from a large amount of data. Since there are not that many institutes that offer Process Mining classes in Korea, this special lecture was very popular. Ms. Sun Young Lee (Yonsei University, Senior) says, “For the first time, I got to know what process mining is by participating in this competition at UNIST. I think process mining is necessary for improving process which is the most important in producing and manufacturing business areas.” The assignment for the competition was ‘Electronic Equipment Repair Service Process Improvement.’ Students practiced to become proficient of using analysis tool before starting projects. Process mining tools, Disco and Process Analyzer, were used for analyzing data at the competition. UNIST made sure that each team consists of students from different majors and colleges in order to maximize participants’ variety. All teams analyzed the assignments on their own and presented the solutions they had concluded. Mr. Gook Young Jung (Chonnam National University, Senior) says, “I thought that Statistics was the most important to analyze big data efficiently, but I learned that combining different kinds of studies is more important than using Statistics in research. In my opinion, experiencing and studying academic theories make people to approach big data creatively. It was such a great experience of being a teammate with students from different majors and universities and sharing different thoughts with them.” The first prize went for the team including Ms. Soo Hyun Oh (Sungkyunkwan University), Ms. Sun Young Lee (Yonsei University) and Mr. Jung Yul Lee (Inha University). They received good reviews for presenting various and logical methods of analysis. They suggested the way of using systemic analysis for redistributing business work. Also, they showed how to fix errors by data preprocessing and drew a conclusion after analyzing data patterns. Mr. Jung Yul Lee says, “We spent a lot of time on data preprocessing. We could analyze data and have useful solutions after correcting the errors of unorganized data and strengthening the consistence of data.” Mr. Kooyul Jung, Dean of Graduate School of Technology Management of UNIST, who hosted the 4th UNIST Big Data Analysis Competition, says, “Even though it was a short time, students who participated with passion and genuineness showed me that general attention of big data analysis got bigger.” He also mentions, “I hope that experiencing how to deal with the corporations’ problems of data analysis helped participants in a realistic way.” The 4th UNIST Big Data Analysis Competition was held by Graduate school of Technology Management. UNIST Graduate school of Technology Management offers different kinds of programs including Business Analytics which is certified by Professional Science Master (PSM), Advanced Professional Science Master for the enterprisers and so on.
